The Math.Epi.Lab at the Canadian Association of Veterinary Epidemiology and Preventive Medicine

The CAVEPM conference rotates between the Canadian veterinary colleges and this year the meeting was hosted here at the Ontario Veterinary College. Our group presented three oral presentation and three posters. It was also a great way for our new summer students to begin their summer research experience.

I am pleased to announce that our group has been extremely successful this spring and I would like to congratulate the following students from our group on their successful applications.

1) Kelsey Spence was awarded an Ontario Graduate Scholarship, and OVC scholarship as well as the Dr. Casey Buizert Memorial Scholarship.

2) Emma Gardner was awarded an OVC fellowship.

3) Rachael Milwid was awarded an OVC scholarship.

4) Gabrielle Brankston was awarded an Ontario Graduate Scholarship, and an OVC scholarship.

Congratulations!

Congratulations to former Math.Epi.Lab member Beverly Goh!

Beverly was an undergraduate research assistant in our group during the summer of 2014. As a part of her summer research project, she conducted a scoping review of dynamic models in veterinary epidemiology. Beverly entered her final paper into the Alltech Young Scientist Paper Competition this fall.  She has just been notified that her paper has been awarded third place in the undergraduate student category out of all Canadian papers submitted to the competition.  Information about the competition and the winning papers can be found here. Congratulations Beverly!

Happy New Year!

The math.epi.lab is thrilled to be starting a new semester! With the new semester, we are adding two new lab members, Dr. Emma Gardner (PhD candidate), and Cyndi Boughen. More information about their research projects will be posted soon. In addition, this semester will see the first course offering at OVC focused on Mathematical Epidemiology and Infectious Disease Dynamics. The course has found an enthusiastic audience here at the University of Guelph and I am excited to start teaching on Wednesday. Stay tuned to read more about the student projects that emerge from the class over the coming months.

OVC Professional Welcoming Ceremony

On Saturday September 27, the new incoming class of student veterinarians at OVC were welcomed to the profession at the Professional Welcoming Ceremony. Students and their families and friends also got a chance to learn about research at OVC. Beverly Goh was a summer student in our research group and she also participated in the Summer Leadership Research Program (SLRP) at the College. Beverly was invited to present her summer research at this event and even had her photo taken with the Dean of the Ontario Veterinary College Dr. Elizabeth Stone. Congratulations Beverly!
